The Greeks believed that love was sacred. You may have heard of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. Greeks referred to love at first sight as, theia mania, which means a passionate madness from God. Has modern culture shifted away from Greek mythology on love? Are people falling madly in love as the Greeks did…or faking it? Could it be that the pursuit of love and romance has lost a true cult following?
Modern psychology suggests that there are two bases for ‘love at first sight’. First, people fall in love through attraction. A study suggests that we determine a person’s attractiveness in 0.13 seconds on average! Secondly, in the first few minutes of meeting someone new we form conjectures about a relationship’s future potential.
In a separate survey I recently conducted, I discovered that even young people have cast off the idea of love at first sight. Less than half of the middle school students I surveyed held a belief in finding true love. One student commented, “If you don’t get to know a person you cannot fall in love with them right away.”
Yet, if we look to Hollywood, the pursuit of true love is still a major cinematic theme. For instance, in The Notebook Noah immediately falls in love with Allie when he first sees her. Or take A Cinderella Story where Austin falls in love with Sam when he looks into her eyes. Similarly, in West Side Story Tony and Maria fall in love instantly. Begs the question: Is true love something we can only hope to embrace on a movie screen?
Love is a mystery – an unending quest which eludes many. William Shakespeare once said, “Love is a wonderful, terrible thing.” Nonetheless, there is hope for hopeless romantics. Ladies, you must be patient and not too preoccupied – Prince Charming will come to sweep you off your feet. And fellas keep searching for Cinderella and her glass slipper…she’s waiting for you to find her!
Whoever this Meg girl- ohhhhhhhh. I know her, she has my email. She almost let her friends spam me.
ReplyDeleteWell she's a good writer.
Thanks bieber. I think.
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys like this.
Epic win!
ReplyDeleteMy theory is that "falling in love" is just that. It happens unexpectedly. You don't reach upward for it. Instead, you land deep down in it. It's not something you make happen. Rather, it's something that happens to you...and you realize that Cupid's done it again!
Great job Meg!
I personally am not a big fan of love at this point in life. I think it's weird that all these chemicals inside your brain make you want to marry someone,it sounds like some kinda sci-fi horror flick. BUT KUDOS to Meg for a totally kicking artical! I aore the tittle real attetion grabber, picture is astonding, well reaserched and very sincere!
ReplyDeleteWow Meg...great article; I wish I could write like that. I myself am not really into love at this point of age, and don't want to. I like the picture, it goes very well with the theme of the article. I think most peple whio comment will do so of the great quaility of your writing and your concept of the theme.
ReplyDeleteI also haven't been posting since friday because our family went on a trip (we drove there)to L.A.
ReplyDeleteI understAnd most of us are "too young" so be in love, but I honestly don't believe that. I myself might be in love, not with who you may think. Someone from my past, who I miss dearly. But he's miles and miles away. (if you knew what I was talking about you would laugh)
ReplyDeleteNice song choice though. I myself would've gone with something like "Vanilla Twilight" by Owl City that I've had on repeat the whole day thinking about how someone I like a lot is miles away in palm springs and that makes me sad even though we keep arguing about March Madness.
GO BUTLER!!!
Well Steph and I are the only ones who really talked about love from a 12-year-old's POV and really right now it's like that exersise Mr.B did where you had two answers to a 'this or that' question and you went to whatever side of the room that had the answer you agreed with, you're either on the "I could go out with someone" side or the "I can wait" side Steph and I are on that side of the line, and you're on the other side. (I'm not counting Mr.B because he's an adult) As for music, Mr.B had a great idea going w/ something EVERYONE knew(-me but then again I never do)I myself would have chosen otherwise but hey you can't please everyone! (Maybe we should all bring in a favorite love themed song?)

this was a good article!it showed two opinions!(;
ReplyDeleteWoe Nelly...I'm back in the building...this time with more insight on the topic of love...
ReplyDeleteIn sixth grade I had plenty of crushes. But, there's no way we were capable of true love. We were simply too young to know what love was really all about (poll results, so far, indicate the same - half of the people voted "Decline to state...I'm just tryna finish middle school.")
BUT, you can "like" someone in the 6th grade. You can like 'em a whole lot too! Unfortunately, I've heard several stories this school year about students who've had 'make-ups to break-ups.' And, I must admit that it is disappointing to hear of boys dumping girls (or vice-versa) without regard for the dumpee’s feelings or reputation. It might be a better idea to avoid "going out" with someone altogether...especially if you know that in the end:
1. You don't really like them.
2. You were trying to make someone else jealous.
3. You're hoping to gain popularity.
These are only three of the Ten Commandments of Love. I invite you to share a few more to complete the "holy scroll".
Thou shalt not...?

ReplyDelete*looks up* UMMMMMMM *thinks for about an hour* Thou shalt not change for love?
ReplyDeleteI think Johnny Cash said it best,"...and it burns, burns, burns, the ring off fire..." from what I've heard love does hurt sometimes, so that's the question isn't it? How far will you go for love? And that brings up another question, what if it's not mutal?
"It's like a book elegently bound but in a language that you can't read, just yet." -Posses Your Heart, Death Cab for Cutie
Just to clarify I meant puppy love. Thank god spring break is almost over. I wonder how I'll survive the summer. It'll suck so much. Just the truth. And Sylvia is probably gonna hurt me cuz I made her look like a creeper cuz I told ppl @ camP she liked a guy from presidio who is uber cute but I didn't get to get his # cuz he wuz sick 2day.
ReplyDeleteBut he did beat someone (who's in palm springs)'s butt at baseball. But that doesn't change my feelings about that person. :)
And another LOve thing is that someone should not be judged for who they like/love.
ReplyDelete*died of heat stroke*......... *reanimates*
ReplyDeleteWHATDAYA mean "puppy love'?! What the heck IS puppy love? What do puppies have to do with love?! They have it easy primal urges all the way, none of this crushes garbage! All this love talk feels like being injected with a thousand cups of salt.

How come nobody posted "April Fools" on one of their comments yesterday? That would've been nice... I couldn't post yesterday because I was cleaning up with my mom and sisiters(Spring Cleaning). I also never played with puppies or kittens when I was little (although they look fluffy...)because when I was a baby, my cousin's cat scratched me near my eye when I was trying to play with it, and also becuase I was allergic to dog and cat fur for a while...
ReplyDeleteOh, and many greek godesses were also virgin, so if you were a girl that had a "loyalty" to Artemis or something like that, you can't get married or fall for a guy.
ReplyDeleteYou know Archduke Franz Ferdinan suffered for his love, when he married his wife Sofie he had to have a morganatic marraige, which ment that she couldn't show up with him in public often, ride in the royal carriage or sit in the royal box. Their kids also couldn't inhieret the throne.
ReplyDelete"I love you it's true, (it's true) you're best in everyway and everyday. and in my heart you can see what I feel, because love is on our way to fly away. Baby one more time can we meet tonight see the love in your eyes can we meet in the skies..."-One More Time, Dj Carpi
Heyyyyy it's da song!!! I wuv dis song.
