craziness is like heaven

James Marshall Hendrix once said, “craziness is like heaven.” The pop culture scene can be aptly described by one word, CRAZY. “Pure, unadulterated ugliness,” a comedian once said. And along with our changing and crazy celebrities comes an even zanier media industry. Little imps which tote cameras searching for ways to promote lies and twisted tales of scandal. Again, one word, CRAZY.
Being crazy, then, can be both good and evil...right? For an artist to succeed he or she must be willing to push the envelope – to say and do things which are different, unique, and original…I suppose.
Well, in crazy times like these, we have Rihanna to save us from perdition! Ummm, no, I’m only kidding. She’s no messiah. But, Rihanna’s latest two singles, “Only Girl” and “What’s My Name?” are catchy and possess relatively nice beats. In Rihanna’s brand of music you’re hypnotized by the interplay of the beat, vibrant word play, and mainly, a karaoke type hook/chorus line. She doesn’t impress us with vocal rifts, but with pulsating rhythms, an island accent, and more expressly, some new way of perceiving the romance around or within us. Oddly enough, her special brand of music works; it resonates. Good beat + good chorus = Sold. Hook, line, and sinker! Rihanna’s chorus on “What’s My Name?” goes:
“Oh na na, what’s my name? Oh, na na, what’s my name?”
The “Na” sound (or is it a word? Idk.) has always been an extremely catchy hook. Case in point, “Na, na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, hey, goodbye.”
Yes, it’s true. Rihanna changes everything about herself constantly. She gets crazy with it too – tattoos, piercings, and oddly shaped clothing from fashion boutiques in London and Paris – and this is perhaps to bolster her much weaker vocal talent. I mean, she can sing, but let’s be honest; she’s just not in the league of Aretha Franklin, Monica, Mariah Carey, or Beyonce. At least I think. But, one really doesn’t need to sound like Beyonce to get a record deal these days anyways. That’s why we have auto-tune and other sound engineering tools. Duh!
I digress. Will save that for a later blog...
What makes Rihanna a person of interest, scrutiny, obsession, criticism & admiration is her style, her persona. Not to mention that tiny blowup between her ex-boyfriend…a one, Chris Brown – whose resurgence as a mega star is – come on, let’s say it together – CRAZY!
Getting back to the music, Rihanna’s latest two singles provide some measure of sanity. Lyrically, she is daring, to say the least. Yet, what one might appreciate, is that there is some measure of softness to her melodies. She’s actually conveying music, rather than screaming, “Baby, I’m a rock star!” as she did so ridiculously on last season’s, American Idiot, I mean Idol.
And we, the listeners, need more of this kind of music. Sing to us. Enough craziness. Amidst the sounds of violence, anger, conflict and destruction all around us, we, spiritual beings wearing human suits, must have a musical balance. Yes, we need the hard-pounding, rough, raw and rugged sounds to express the craziness of our urban existence. But then again, we need a smooth, slow, sweet voice to gently remind us of a much nicer place. Rihanna does’t completely accomplish this on her latest hits, but she’s moved an inch or two closer to a place called heaven…
In closing let me ad-live from Jay-Z– “This is death of auto-tune, ah moment of silence.” (DOA “Death of Auto-Tune”, 2009)
Mr.B, why did you keep skipping back and forth through your ideas? As I read, I didn't know if you were talking about Rihanna or James Marshall Hendrix because your first paragrah was about him, making me thik that the whole post was going to be about him since the title paragrah is always the first. Even if I didn't know who the person subject was, I knew that the objective of the post was to show us something about...CRAZY!
ReplyDeleteMr.b, wouldn't Camilla have written somethig long, explanitory and expressive by now?
ReplyDeleteMr. Bee, I enjoyed reading this informative blog entry about James Marshall Hendrix and Rihanna, but who's Rihanna? Anways, let me start with my compliments. I still hope this doesn't take a while because I need to finish my math homework! Okay, starting with the compliments, you had many words that I don't know! I'm talking about words like predition, zanier, and messiah. You have great vocabulary and a mind full of lots of knowledge and experience! Besides that, I feel jealous of how you managed to express your feelings toward this music. You've got lots of talents Mr.Bee! You realy love vocabulary! I hope you enjoy these compliments.
ReplyDeletePS: You rule Mr.Bee!
A Song Review
ReplyDeleteThis review is about "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift. I think the musical artist shows talent because she manages to make the lyrics go with the song. I don't find any important theme than just simply love. This song is good because it doesn't have violence or inappropriate words.I think the lyrics are great! I think this song is amazing!
This song does sound like the artist included emotional feelings in it. The song seems like as if she's singing to a boy in real life!
This doesn't mean that I'm crazy about Taylor Swift. I just like a few of her songs. Down here, I pasted websites to the music video and the song's lyrics.

I agree with Stephanie that you have been skipping back and forth, but this was an interesting review to read. By the way, you should publish it, like it should be in an article. Anyways, I heard Rihanna's song "What's My Name" on the radio the other day, and I do agree that the chorus is catchy, thanks to the "Na". Also, I thought the whole song review was deep, but still awesome at the same time.
ReplyDeleteSong Review from Sienna Knapp
ReplyDelete"Holiday" by Madonna
The artist is clearly saying if everyone took a little time to celebrate and forget about everything stressful - we would all have a good time. She stated "It' time for the good times, and forget about the bad times, yeah". She is basically just saying everyone should just take a break for one day and have fun! The title of the song is "Holiday" because a holiday is a day to have fun and celebrate. There is such a strong beat to accompany the words and song itself. I would really recommend this song to eveyone. I give this song five stars! :)
Ello,
ReplyDeleteMr.Briggs, first of all I agree with Abdul, you have a great way with words and I enjoyed reading this. The part about "American Idiot" was really funny. I can really type too much cause I need to do m y homework like Abdul. XD
The Music Review I did was on High School Musical The Concert. It has 14 songs in the CD. I think the CD is bias because different genders sing. I think the artists displays talents because when people show up in concerts they look classic but not High School Musical. They dressed up and danced. There are important messages in the CD because some of the songs represents their feelings. Some important messages are in Vanessa Hudgens songs like "When there was Me and You" and "Say OK". The messages is positive because expressing feeelings aren't negative. I give the songs a 5 stars even people think High School Musical is for babies. All the songs have a good tune to my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI agree with stephaine that you are skipping back and forth. Anyways Rihanna's new song does have a good beat to it and it is kinda catchy. But i wouldn't hear it for 5 times though cause whenever I hear a song 5 times i will hate the song.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started reading your review Mr.Bee, I thought your thoughts were all over the place but it was pretty interesting to read.Anyway, let's start with the review:
ReplyDeleteI did my Music Review on the song, "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield.I think Natasha Bedingfield displays wonderful talent because in my opinion,I think she writes songs that have a good beat and appropriate language. I think this song does has a theme to it.The theme I think that is for this song is to express your feelings and showing who you really are. This song is good because the lyrics talk about something by expressing it in a song.On a scale of 1-10,I think I would pick 10 because it's one of my favorite songs that I think others would like to hear too.
I would describe the lyrics a little unclear, but once I have heard it a couple of times,I can understand and connect with the words she was singing.
Overall,I thought this was a good song.
Yeah Mr bee why did you keep going back and forth from Rihanna to Jimmy Hendrix? It was getting confusing.
ReplyDeleteAnother song review by banana (- orange ='(
ReplyDeleteBlack and gold- Sam Sparro
This song is the more upbeat love song out of some others presented by this artist. This song is about a guy looking into the night sky, seeing the stars and wanting to be with the girl he loves. " ...'cause if your not really here than I don't wana' be either,I want do be next to you black and gold, black and gold, black and gold..." This song is very serious on an emotional level but is still dancable. A dancy sea cruzy feel dominates the insrumentle, and it's semi-high class sound makes this very listenable and easy on your ears ;). And now a link from our sponsers:

ReplyDeletethis song is OK.
ReplyDeleteStephanie's right. Y do u go to James Marshall Hendrix then go to Rihanna and go back to James Marshall Hendrix. I thought u were gonna revise it. You should just stick to Rihanna if ur doing a music review on her song.
ReplyDeletefirst off, Will everyone stop wacking Mr.Briggs over the head with a slab of granite because his topics go Helter Skelter ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWuXmfgXVxY ) That song is a great classic. So it isn't a list sue him, and shoot his lawyer (you can't snipe me, can't l.d.s.k me!!!) and second of all there will be a third review under this one.
ReplyDeleteThat's just so random Camilla....
ReplyDeleteI WARNED YOU!!!! MAWHAWHAWHAWHAWHAHWHAW!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFashion- Lady Gaga ( 3/22/11 she performs in SF I think) This song is for every fashonista out there, ( what are you staring at me for??) The lyrics talk about trying on every piece of high quality clothing. Which brings me to my next point, this song talks about wearing the most expensive cloths you can get your hands on, and being a model for them. It is very light upbeat music, for anybody who likes fashion, so if you hate cloths don't click this link, if you do don't blame me!!! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0CtyIdjSBI ) and I am liking all the reviews very well written and thought through =).
I liked Mr briggs music review because of the words describing his music review. His wording is very discrebtive though I am getting confused between Rihanna and James Marshall. I like the sense of humor about American Idiots. Pretty good all together but thsi time dont make it confusing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like Mr.Briggs music review because of the way he cover most of Rihanna life, music, and cloth. I also like the humerous comments the he adds to not make this just a long boring blog that I read. But sometimes Mr.B goes off track.
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering how many of you guys listen to minor artist? like the shanghai restoration project, Loquat, the slip, Alias and Ehren, the red thread, and ones that aren't so big in america ( can't remember any right now) these guys make up like 66% of the music world, I personanally like some of this music better, but I just wanted to know who some of your favorite artists are so ping back!!!!
ReplyDeleteyinyue (chinese traditional)
musikk (nowegein sp?)
hudba (czech)
